The Curtainbox Theater Company | W;t
I was commissioned by The Curtainbox Theater Company to design the primary key art and promotional poster for Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, W;t. Running in August 2010, this high-profile production was helmed by acclaimed guest director Philip Wm. McKinley (director of the five-time Tony-nominated Broadway production The Boy From Oz).
Creative Strategy & Execution Because W;t deals with deeply poignant, clinical themes surrounding mortality and academic intellect, the design strategy required a restrained, highly sophisticated touch. I leaned into a clean, minimalist, editorial aesthetic that relies heavily on stark composition and powerful visual symbolism:
The Typographic Anchor: The title of the play—specifically the distinct semi-colon punctuation—is treated as the central design element. Rendered in a soft, clinical teal, the oversized typography instantly draws focus and establishes the clinical yet literary tone of the play.
Symbolic Imagery: Rather than a crowded cast photo, the composition relies on an empty, starkly lit hospital gurney against a crisp white background. Placing a solitary baseball cap on the pillow functions as a quiet, powerful symbol of the main character’s vulnerability and loss of identity during her medical journey.
Information Architecture: Managing a heavy data load—including a complex three-week performance schedule, ticketing information, a featured actor headshot, and extensive industry union and production credits—demanded a rigorous typographic grid. The teal color palette is pulled into the text blocks to unify the overall layout and maintain a balanced, scannable visual hierarchy.
